UAE to ban 10,000 old taxis by end of 2009

Several thousands of old taxis will be banned from the UAE roads by end of 2009, as part of the new vehicle regulations to phase out old vehicles, the Ministry of Interior said, according to Gulf News.

The process of decommissioning about 10,826 taxis is part of the new regulations, starting on December 1, which states that taxis older than five years will not be renewd or registered.

The largest number of older cabs is from Abu Dhabi with 6,134 vehicles. Dubai follows with 3,676 while the other emirates have comparatively lower number of cabs that will be phased out. A total of 96 cabs will go off the roads from Sharijah, 63 from Fujairah, 487 from Umm A1 Quwain, 231 from Ras A1 Kaimah and 139 from Ajman.

”Old taxis pose a potential risk to the lives of road users and passengers,” an Official at the National Transport Authorith said. ”Because of the extensive use of taxis and the long distance run by them unlike private vehicles, taxis tend to run down quickly.”

New vehicle exports off 4.8%

Exports of new built-up motor vehicles in October totaled 575,391 units, down 4.8% from a year earlier. This was the first month of year-on-year decrease in two months.

Exports of Toyota vehicles decreased by 10.6% to 226,118 units, while those of Nissan vehicles fell 3.2% to 66,960 units. Exports of Mazda and Mitsubishi vehicle increased by 1.9% (to 70,937) overseas markets slightly declined 0.2% to 63,448 units.

The September exports represented 56.8% of total vehicle output on Japan, 1.5-point smaller compared with previous month.

According to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, the October exports valued at US%13,583.40 million which comprising of US$10,660.10 million of vehicles and US$2,923.30 million of parts and component. The total value decreased by 3.4% compared with the year-ago month.

The October exports were made up of 504,273 passenger cars (including 16,056 KD sets), down 4.4%, 57,884 trucks (21,675KD sets), down 2.0%, and 13,234 buses (763 KD sets), down 4.8%.

Used vehicle exports down 2.7% to 114,224 units in October

Used vehicle exports in October declined 2.7% (or 3,132 units smaller) compared with the year-ago result to 114,224 units, according to the Ministry of Finance Customhouse Statistics. This is the first decrease in two months and the second month to show such a deline in this year.

The October shipments bound for Russia, the biggest market, increased 10.4% on the year to 50,777 vehicles. Market share of the country stood at 44.5%, 2.0-point larger than previous month. However, the average FOB price fell by around 30,000 yen to 622,040 yen. Used vehicles exported to that country have surpassed 1.8 million units since January 2002 (through October 2008).

Exports to Chile increased 22.8% to 10,246 units. The average FOB price fell by around 10,000 yen to 276,629 yen.

Used vehicles bound for U.A.E. declined 33.4% to 6,074 units. However ,the average FOB price climbed by around 50,000 yen to 388,355 yen.

Exports to South Africa soared 71.0% to 5,527 units. The average FOB price rise by around 20,000 yen to 356,516 yen.

Used vehicles bound for Kenya and New Zealand fell by 17.4% and 55.8%, respectively. Exports to Bangladesh and the Philippines also dropped by 23.3% and 41.7%, respectively.
