Used vehicle exports from Japan in May totaled 50,676 units, down 52.6% from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Finance Customhouse statistics. It was the 8th consecutive month of year-on-year decline since last October. The May exports this year, which were the lowest April result since 2001, were also down 19.3% compared with the previous month.
Seven destinations, including Bangladesh, posted year on year increases in May.
United Arab Emirates maintained the largest destination for used vehicles from Japan in May. Exported volume to that nation totaled 7,180 units, down 14.5% year on year. The average FOB price dropped by around 80,000 yen from a year ealier.
Bangladesh ranked second with 5,651 units, showing a large increase of 50.6%. The Bangladesh government is considering? an increase of import tariff for used vehicles. The final tax structure on used car imports will be announced on June 30 when the budget come into effect, according to a local media The Daily Star senior reporter.
New Zealand came in third with 4,915 units, down 17.1%. The average FOB price sharply dropped by around 120,000 yen.
Exports to Russia and Chile sharply declined 91.1% and 74.4%, respectively. Reduced volume of used vehicles bound for these two countries totaled some 55,667 units on the year. That means roughly 75% of reduced volume of total exports for May.
Used vehicles bound for New Zealand decluned 24.1% to 3,517 units. The average FOB price sharply?dropped by around 200,000 yen from a year earlier.
Exports to Mongoia (down 84%), Singapore (off 77%), and Peru (down 58%) showed significant year on year decreases.
For the first five months of this year, used vehicle exports totaled 234,877?units, down 40.0%, or 348,531 units fewer, compared with the year ago month.
