Deregistered vehicles for export off 18% in March

Used vehicle deregistrations for export (Yushutsu-masshou) in March totaled 96,935 units, down 18.2% from a year earlier (118,445 units in 2009).

The March total was made up of 28,182 midsize & largesize cars, down 18.4%, 46,292 small cars, off 18.3%, 5,776 heavy- and medium-duty trucks, down 15.9%, 13,501 light trucks, off 20.4%, 749 buses, up 25.7%, and 2,435 special purpose  and other vehicles, down 13.6%.

Toyota vehicles accounted for 56.9% (55,187 units) of totale deregistrations for export in March, 1.9 percentage points larger than previous month. The leading brand was followed by Nissan vehicles (10.7%), import brand vehicles (6.4%), and Honda brands vehicles (5.6%).

Used vehicle sales in March down 7.1%

Sales of over-1,000cc engine used vehicles (Tourokusha) in March declined 7.1% on the year to 507,329 units. it marked 15th straight month of decline.

The March total was made up of 202,310 midsize & largesize cars, down 6.0%, 245,364 small cars, off 6.8%, 18,889 heavy- and medium-duty trucks, down 18.3%, 29,154 light trucks, off 9.6%, 1,763 buses, up 1.1%, and 9,205 special purpose vehicles, down 9.6%, and others.

In fiscal 2009 (April 2009 through march 2010), sales of used vehicles, excluding under 660cc engine minivehicles (Kei), totaled 3,947,289 units, down 7.5% on the year. It marked the fourth consecutive year of decrease.

It was the first time for the industry to see below 4 million-units level of the sales.

The FY 2009 sales were made up of 3,394,870 passenger cars, down 6.8%, 444,453 trucks, down 12.2%, and 15,051 buses, down 5.1%.

In contrast, new car sales (including minivehicles) for the fiscal year posted its first year-on-year increase since 2005. New vehicls sold in the year totaled 4,880,265 units, up 3.8 from a year earlier.

Sales of over 1,000cc engine vehicles, in particular, climbed 10.0% to 3,182,073 units, markeing the first increase in seven years. The double-digit rise also marked the first time in 20 years.

Government scrap incentive programs and tax breaks for fuel efficient cars contributed to the industry wide increase.

Meanwhile, sales of minivehicles totaled 1,698,192 units for FY2009, down 6.1%. It was the third straight year of decrease.

Used vehicles for overseas markets mark double-digit rise 3rd straight month

Used vehicle exoprts in March totaled 80,327 units, an increase of 48.9% from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Finance Custombouse statistics. It marked the third consecutive month to show double-digit increase.

The March figure was a 40.1% increase from previous month.

According to the analysis conducted by the International Auto Trade Association (iATA), all destinations but Uganda in the top 25 destinations saw year-on-year increases for March.

The March total marked the first over 80,000 unit-mark since December 2008.

United Arab Emirates retained the No.1 position with 11,227 units, up 3.7%. The average FOB price also rose by nearly 30,000 yen on the year.

Chile climbed th the second position, posting a remarkable increase of 284.4% from a year earlier. The average FOB price remained almost unchanged at around 240,000 yen level.

Exports to New Zealand, ranked third, increased 57.1% to 7,104 units. Notably, the average FOB price rose by about 100,000 yen.

Used vehicles bound for Russia also sharply increased 66.8% to 6,527 units in March. The average FOB price increased by around 30,000 yen.

Exports to South Africa rose by 154.6% to 6,430 units. The average FOB price remained unchanged.

Exported vehicles to the top five destinations account for 49.0% of total exports from Japan.

Exports to Mongolia suddenly increased from last year’S 79 vehicles to 1,138 vehicles. The avearge FOB price, however, dropped by around 60,000 yen.

Used vehiles bound for Indonesia also jumped from last year’s 191 units to 965 units. The average FOB price remains unchanged at around 3.5 million yen.

Afghanistan (up 99.6%), Cyprus (up 88.4%), U.K. (up 116.0%), Georgia (up 193.4%), and Mauritius (up 94.8%) also sohwed substantial year-on-year increases.

In the first three months of this year, exports of used cars, trucks and busses from Japan totaled 180,917 units, up 52.7%, or 62,477 units more, compared with the year-ago result.
